This is a great book! Since Prodigal I have eagerly been awaiting the second book of the series, and I was NOT disappointed! This story is so fast paced and interesting without skipping over the details that make this story so realistic feeling. The author really knows how to draw in readers and hold their attention! Great book! I can't wait for the third installment!

Prodigal - A Book You Won't Forget!

I don't even know how to begin to describe how much I enjoyed this book. It is a read you won't soon forget.

Samuel Hersberger is returning to his Amish roots after being away for 25 years. What brings him home? His dying Father.

Samuel's 25 years in the English world has been quite a journey. A journey that the reader will find is filled with many secrets that Samuel does not share in this book. There are a few secrets that come out but mostly for the time being Samuel is keeping secrets to himself until the time is right. There is a secret that was kept from Samuel that he knew nothing about.

Samuel is happy that he has arrived home before his Father's passing. Samuel knows he has spent too many years away and has missed his family immensely.

While home he quickly becomes smitten with Mary, an Amish widow. She is quite a few years younger than Samuel and has two children. Mary quickly becomes quite smitten with Samuel too.

I do not want to go into a lot of detail about this book because it would be a spoiler for those who haven't read it. I hope I've written the right words that will make you feel as though this is a must read book for you.

I love that the author brings out the importance of Faith in God. He paints a picture of a gentle man who loves his God, his family, his friends, and his community. A gentle man who is willing to risk his life to save others.

There is one thing that I did not like about this book. It ended too soon! I can't wait for Book 2 to be released. Readers you will not be disappointed in Prodigal.

This is a great read about a character returning home after being away for so long. The characters were the highlight of this novel, for me. The story masterfully develops characters simultaneously, including the female lead, Mary. She is a strong female whose journey every reader can surely find a piece to relate to.

As a reader who coincidentally lives near the locations that the characters do, I was quite impressed by Carpenter's commitment to accurate depictions of real places.

The descriptive details included by the author about Amish culture generate respect and admiration as a the reader for the research that must have been completed by Carpenter during the writing process. Despite being a fiction novel, this book is completely accurate in the real details.

Definitely looking forward to reading the recently-released sequel!

This review is from: Prodigal (Volume 1) (Paperback)
First of all I have to say that out of the 100 or so Amish fiction books that I have read so far, this book is right up on the top of my list. It was written so well that I felt like I was right there in the midst of the story. It isn't a predictable storyline. There were a few surprising turn of events. The story really kept my interest peeked. I didn't want to put it down once I started reading. I am truly looking forward to the next book in this series. Two thumbs up!

This book is a must read for anyone and especially those interested in the Amish culture. In my line of work I come into contact with Amish people almost daily. I knew very little of their way of life but have always been interested. This book opened my eyes to their way of living from an outsiders perspective. The main character, having returned to his family after many years of being away, gives great insight into the life of the Amish. I started reading this book one night and finished it the following night. I could not put it down and look forward to the next book in the series!

This is a really great book! I couldn't stop reading it! I appreciate how Samuel spent time away from the Amish community and has to dive back in...I think it makes the novel more approachable to someone who doesn't know much about the Amish. The events in Samuel's life as well as the references to his past kept my interest high, and I really like how the focus isn't on just him the whole time (i.e. Samuel's nephew and the other Mary :)). I can't wait for the next one!
